Dreams become reality in Zanzibar

“Karibu Zanzibar” was the chant when I left Zanzibar airport, followed closely by “TAXI!”. This was my second time to pass through the terminal, but the first time as one of those other people, an expat working in Zanzibar.

My journey had started 3 months ago when I visited Tanzania on holiday – I did the typical tourist thing; game parks, safaris, lots and lots of drinking and a final stop off in Zanzibar. As the days slowly idled by, I quickly relaxed and had an epiphony that every person on holiday has (especially if you are from sunny England): “I’m moving”.

As I sipped my beer in The Zanzibari hotel I stated to the person next to me “this would be a great place to work” – tiny did I know that 3 months later I would be driving back to Nungwi to go and live and work in the very hotel where I had my light bulb moment. Sometimes I go and sit with a beer, looking at the same view with a smile on myself, wondering whether fate had a hand to play in all of this.

The way it all came about seems too strange to be true – as soon as I got back to my flat in Liverpool after the holiday, I logged onto jobsabroad.com and found a job in Tanzania that looked interesting. I sent an e-mail with my C.V. attached and got a reply 2 days later – it turns out the person advertising was the manager of The Zanzibari, who I had met while on holiday. One thing led to another, and next thing I know, I’d handed in my resignation, sold all my stuff and was on a plane to paradise island, otherwise known as Zanzibar.

I’ve now been here 3 months and I have not looked back since – the weather, people and way of life is something that cannot be matched. So if you are heading out to Tanzania, make sure to come and state hello at our hotel in Zanzibar!
