Etosha Park Day 2
Etosha Park – day 2
Up early again for game drives all day in our huge orange truck, as we meandered through and around the park. We came upon a massive dead giraffe right next to the road, and a sleepy pride of lion, with bellies so full that they could not keep their eyes open.
Although some of our group got sleepy and perhaps a bit bored, we are still not tired of game drives, each curve in the road revealing more and more interesting vistas filled with game. And more and more pic ops for us. Oryx, impala, red hartebeest, lion, wildebeest, elephant, giraffe. Etosha has it all and we were not disappointed. Our first rhino sighting turned into yet another one.
Kayla has filled four 48 gb memory cards. And Richard has filled who knows how much of his video camera hard drive. But we still have more memory left for the remainder of our trip.
Lunch was at Halali, where some of our group headed straight for the campsite pool. We ate quickly and headed off for the waterhole, cameras in hand.
Afternoon game drive started at 2:30 for a few more hours of game viewing. Then we camped at Okaukuejo Camp, where yet another water hole entertained us after supper. This time we were REALLY entertained. Giraffe moved on when a few lion showed up. A mom rhino with tiny baby fended off a faux attack by two young lion while a massive female looked on with tiny interest. A male lion strolled nearby, roaring into the night. Then a breeding herd of elephant with lots of tiny babies materialized out of the dark for a drink.
As they faded away into the night, another rhino slowly approached, then another one, then another. All in all, we counted six rhino at one time around the water hole, butting each other like brothers would fight, and splashing in right into the water. We stayed until 10:00, and we were told that the lions returned after we left for more entertainment.
