School so far …
I don’t really know where to begin when writing about school!!!! Having been in school for just over a week now I feel like I am slowly getting to grip with things. As I’m sure most people can imagine, it has been a total shock and my cold heart melts a little more each day. I can’t even begin to explain just how different education here in Tanzania is compared to what I have been used to in both England and the USA. Although there are a few similarities with my experiences in Tilbury…there are absolutely no similarities with what I experienced in Chicago. I have been placed in a nursery school which caters for children aged from two to six years of age. The school is called ‘New Nursery’ and was built last year by Art in Tanzania volunteers and is run by a local lady called Mary. Mary used to work at a larger school called Bahari School but last year she approached Art in Tanzania and asked for their help to open her own school. Mary has very little money and the 20 students she has on roll are expected to pay a small fee to attend her school which will in turn effectively pay her wages. As many children cannot afford to pay the fee, Mary often works without pay as she believes that the children should not miss out on education because of their parents. The nursery runs just morning sessions which include Swahili, Math, English, Singing and Drawing lessons. Seb (the other volunteer) and I take most lessons except obviously the Swahili classes. It’s lots of fun and very rewarding but so so so difficult trying to teach children who speak Swahili and know very little English. Mary is very grateful of everything we do with the children and I feel she is learning a lot from me…mainly because she knows very little about teaching
The only teaching method here is repeating phrases and copying from the blackboard so she is excited about every song, game or teaching style I use with the children. God is thanked A LOT for me being here…it’s so cute!
