Endeavour
Endeavour is sailing with Captain James Cook arrived in Australia in 1770.
Out to prove or disprove the existence of a "Great Southern Land", the English explorer James Cook sailed from England in 1768 on HM Bark Endeavour. He reached New Zealand in 1770, toured and completely mapped the islands of North and South, then headed north.
He followed the eastern coast of Australia and landed at Botany Bay April 28, 1770, in what is now Botany Bay National Park.
Cook's Endeavour voyage in 1768-1771 has greatly contributed to world knowledge of navigation, navigation and geography. It was the first captain to calculate his longitudinal position with accuracy using a complex mathematical formula developed in the 1960s.
HM Bark Endeavour was recreated to exacting standards, with construction begun in 1988 in Fremantle, Western Australia. Due to financial difficulties, a charitable trust, HM Bark Endeavour Foundation, was established in 1991 to continue work on the new Endeavour.
The completed replica was launched December 9, 1993 and commissioned April 16, 1994. She headed to Sydney in October this year, visiting Albany, Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne and other ports along the path.
Upon his arrival in Sydney on Endeavour was displayed at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour. Since then, Endeavour has sailed in Australia and New Zealand and began a journey around the world through South Africa, England, the east and west coasts of North America before returning in New Zealand and Australia. She was in Sydney Harbour during the Sydney Olympics 2000.
The Endeavour set on other international trips in April 2005 and returned to Sydney Cook's hometown of Whitby, England.
The nonprofit HM Bark Endeavour Foundation has transferred ownership of the vessel for the Australian Government.
In case of Sydney, the Endeavour is docked at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour and is open to the public 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. daily. Charges apply.
