Do not let the romance languages Hinder

Say you're an American male on a visit to Australia and you meet the Dinka-di Aussie Sheila. You click and it asks whether you can meet her later, say, 17 hours, near the ski by the pharmacist on the first floor of the building Oz. "No worries, mate," you say, having already used this term Aussie.

Common Words and Phrases Aussie

To better understand the languge Australian know some words and phrases common in Australia. While some may be familiar use, they are commonly used in Australian spoken or written. They are not Australian slang, rhyming slang or more esoteric, though the distinctions are too fine to be concerned.

Strine and Aussie Slang Australian SlangUnfortunately change rapidly with time and something in use today may have carked by tomorrow. Here is the beginning of an alphabetical list of Strine and Aussie slang, something to do when you hear or come across a particular Australianism. Use only for reference as terms with dying disuse.Australian Rhyming Slang

As with normal slang (who said the slang was normal?) Use changes over time and many slang words and phrases rhyme in the past can no longer be used. But for what it's worth, here are some examples of rhyming slang, if only to understand how rhyming slang words and phrases came.

In fact, in spite of the line from the original verse, the monument of the dog on the Tuckerbox lies about five miles (eight kilometers) north of the town of Gundagai in New South Wales.

Celebrated in Australian folklore, poetry and song, the dog on the Tuckerbox, a monument to the pioneers of the Riverina region, has become an icon of the past of Australia.

A version of the dog's role in pioneer times, the dog is kept tuckerbox his master and other possessions, when he sought the help of being stuck in a river crossing. The teacher, a bullocky or driver of a team of bull, never returns, but the dog continues to keep tuckerbox until his death.

Tucker is an Australian word for food, so that the dog kept foodbox symbolized subsistence (in need of protection) of the pioneers of the region.

The story of the faithful dog is most likely a fictionalized version. The refrain of the original verse of the dog allegedly was:

Then the dog sat on the trunk-nine miles from Gundagai Tucker.

But it was said that the "real" home, it was not 'sit' the dog did. (Think of a word of one syllable beginning with "s" that rhymes with "sat" – consider the evils that plague bullocky -. And think what happens to the other evil, in a manner of speaking , top it off)

These lines of verse are part of the story written by an unknown poet writing under the name Bowyang Yorke and published in the Gundagai Times in the 1880s. One version was written by journalist and poet Jack Gundagai Moses.

Both versions speak of a bullock team is mired in a river crossing nine miles from Gundagai toughness with the dog "sit" on the tuckerbox.

The history of dogs and tuckerbox was included in the song where the dog sits on the Tuckerbox (five miles from Gundagai) by Australian composer Jack O'Hagan who also wrote along the road to Gundagai and when a boy from Alabama meets girl from Gundagai. (O'Hagan had never been to Gundagai.)

The monument on the dog's Tuckerbox was unveiled in 1932 by the then Prime Minister of Australia, Joe Lyons, the 103rd anniversary of the Australian explorer Charles Sturt in 1829 crossing the Murrumbidgee River Riverina.

The monument was the creation of Gundagai Rusconi Frank Mason, another of whose works, a masterpiece of marble, is set out in the city.

Gundagai, 386 km from Sydney, is located along the Hume Highway, which runs inside the Sydney to Melbourne.

Part of the poem Bowyang Yorke about the bill Bullocky:

As I was coming down Conroy’s Gap, I heard a maiden cry; ‘There goes Bill the Bullocky, He’s bound for Gundagai. A better poor old beggar Never earnt an honest crust, A better poor old beggar Never drug a whip through dust.’ His team got bogged at the nine mile creek, Bill lashed and swore and cried; ‘If Nobby don’t get me out of this, I’ll tattoo his bloody hide.’ But Nobby strained and broke the yoke, And poked out the leader’s eye; Then the dog sat on the trunk-nine miles from Gundagai Tucker.
