Served at a local group offers overseas

Group deals are always popping in my life. My mother gives me prints of Groupon deals for Christmas each year without fail (they put the coupons in boxes and wraps them). And if I do not Grou Pons opening of "Santa," I see the shared group deals aplenty in my Facebook feed, or forwarded to my inbox from friends, family and, well, people I barely know.

I am heading to Paris on vacation this week. So I succumbed to social pressure and checked out the Groupon Paris to see if a boulangerie bargain or cut-rate tours of the city could be found. I stumbled a deal for half-price cruise on the Canal Saint-Martin.

Now, this was where things got tricky. The booking process is in French too. And the bit where I had to enter my address did not allow a country to give.

I tried to my U.S. address type with my credit card information, but my order was rejected, I assume that this happened because the system, by default, considered that I live in France. I took one second stabbing in the sale, but paid with PayPal instead of a credit card. It worked, probably because PayPal has my home address in its system. I paid $ 25.29 for two cruise tickets, this was the final price using the exchange rate of PayPal, which had a success rate slightly more expensive than the current interbank rate as shown on XE.com ($ 24.55).

It is clear that the international Groupon pages are intended for local customers. Still, with a PayPal account and a small translation, it is possible to grab some good discounts in distant destinations. The same goes for Living Social, who, like Groupon, has a wide selection of international deals to be published in local languages. Given that these sites often run promotions for restaurants, tours, transportation and other goodies that would be useful during a trip run, it is worth to notify the local offerings receive e-mails for the destination you next visit. (Other offers group sites, including BuyWithMe, find and deal DealOn offer many bargains in the U.S., but have a limited international reach.)
