Daily News: What’s Going On In Paris?
Cy Twombley’s ceiling at The Louvre
A number of items on Paris travel appeared on the interwebs today. Here are some, summarized and linkified for your convenience.
1) Seth Sherwood writes a great piece on underground Paris: “secluded in private apartments, unmarked buildings, blind alleys and underground caverns, a host of hidden new hangouts has sprung up in the City of Light’s shadows, creating a vogue for stealth addresses and a corresponding surge in confounded pacing, desperately unfolded maps and requests for directions.” While some of these places probably aren’t that exclusive (most have websites and are easily searchable online) there is no question there are some neat selections. There are the secret supper clubs Hidden Kitchen and Chez Nous, Chez Vous, costly hotel La Réserve, wine tasting “operation Ô Chateau, under the radar spa La Nouvelle Athènes, and wellness institute L’Appartement 217. The coolest part of this private Paris movement? Sherwood singles out The Box In Paris, a “’polydisciplinary’ space that melds art, food, hospitality and performance.” [NYTimes]
2) Cy Twombly is the first artist since Georges Braque to be given the honor of decorating a ceiling at The Louvre. “The Lexington, Virginia-born artist stated he was inspired by the colors he found in a Chinese print as well the blue of early Italian Renaissance artist Giotto, who used paint made from lapis lazuli. ‘I was just thinking of the blue with the disks on it, it’s totally abstract … I put all the great Greek sculptors’ names on the top. It’s that simple.’” [AP via USAToday]
3) Now that spring has arrived, Eurocheapo takes the opportunity to recommend two prime Parisian outdoor venues: the Jardin des Tuileries and the Jardin du Luxembourg. The helpful post describes the places, provides historical info, and shares various tips. [EuroCheapo]
