Xavier Rousset is doing her thing and 28/50
Happy 2011, the world. For starters, the new year, we have asked WineChap founder Tom Harrow – one of London's most important people – tell us about some of the best wine lists in his hometown.
Old School: Le Gavroche
Doyen of London's lists, so coldly Gallic You have to love it. In forty page catalog of over 1800 bins Grand Cru Burgundies from the Congo will take the same space as alloted to the world outside France! Unparalleled depth of the vintage and the extra value of a meager selection by the glass to show contempt for the legitimate culture, which still wants to Pret sandwich and a bottle of Evian in one table there is a full four course lunch. Jacket and tie optional, of course, but this list is so worthy of reverence that all guests would be forced to enter a chauffeur-driven Silver Shadow white tie and tails.
NewSkool: Vinoteca Seymour Place
The last opening of 2010 was a welcome addition to the capital of Marylebone Village, a self-proclaimed foodie mecca. Captured the success of the first joint venture, Farringdon that sets a new standard for wine bars in London 5 years ago, the team's Western outpost offers the same simple formula: 25 eclectic well-priced wines by the glass and about 300bins (including retail), alongside a well-prepared, uncomplicated European cuisine. Nobody re-invent the wheel here – they are well enough the first time, and the restoration of London's tired of the wine bar scene – but the formula for a long time can still rolled.
Labor of Love: 28/50 Wine & Kitchen Workshop
Texture from the boys (I can freely inspired by the Scandinavian cooking, wonderful selection of Madeira, remember) quite rightly calls for food aid to make two plays winelists. The first three p.m. offers a changing selection of reds and whites, each, all available in different glass sizes. Other, Collector's List, pulled the private cellars of the owner-sommelier Xavier Rousset customers who want to sell their surplus of mature vintages. Rates for this delicious wine collection highlighting gems Xavier Rhone especially love to do WineChap want to jump in and sing … and get very, very drunk.
Trends (biodynamic): Variety Fitness Zone
Specializes in small plates and wines by natural varietal suitability zone list is a treasure trove of exotic and obscure small artisan producers of mostly regional French, who work permanently, organically or biodynamically. With so many restaurants in the list of encryption at least one of the Groovy Gruner and obscure Portuguese red to show their sommeliers tightly squeezed-to-date, this is a trade-off against the homogenization that WineChap thoroughly supported. Fans of the New World, or even the New World styles from the old world, to walk on.
Gastronomic: Ledbury
Very much up to now one Michelin star earned the added Nigel Platts-Martin's Notting Hill outpost of London is probably the best dinner. Drawing in part, excellently curated group of restaurants into the basement (only Marlon Abela is Sketch and the Mortons would require more extensive library) Aussie sommelier Luke Robertson continues to emphasize top Burgundies and enviable Northern Rhône and the selection of the USA. Prices and vintage selection is a model of sense.
