The art of packing and last days in Edinburgh

These are my last couple of days in Edinburgh. It’s such a weird thought, I feel like I just arrived, but yet my feet are itching and telling me to GO GO GO. I am currently packing the surprisingly large amount of stuff I have accumulated during my 9-months-stay in this beautiful city. I am amazingly glad I got to do my Erasmus year here, studying English Literature, Philosophy and German Studies at the University of Edinburgh. I am also amazingly glad that due to the different semester times in Edinburgh and Berlin, I have nearly 5 months of holidays this summer, which I will spend travelling, WWOOFing and volunteering in Central America.

I have never been homesick, but instead, I am a classic “pre-misser.” Right before I leave a place, I get hit by the realisation of how much I like it and how much the people mean to me. This is what is happening right now. I had such an astonishing time here – all the funny and crazy Couchsurfers I got to know, the friends I made at uni, and of course, the crowning event of participating and performing at the Beltane festival. I really hope I will not cry at my farewell party!

My room looks like the site of a plane crash; no-one except for myself can see that it is actually more organized than it’s ever been. All my shelves, cupboards and drawers are emptied and sorted in three piles: yes, no, and maybe. As usual, the “maybe” pile is huge, and will simply be emptied out into the “no” suitcase that I’ll be sending home via mail once I run out of patience, while my “yes” backpack is bulging already. One can only carry so much stuff though Central America.

My flight to Mexico City leaves from Berlin on 6th June. In the time before that, I will perform a marathon of social events and visits to basically everyone who’s important to me: the Edinburgh Rocks Couchsurfing event, a farewell party with all my friends here in Edinburgh, a huge Couchsurfing camp near Frankfurt, and visiting my father in Duisburg and my ideal friend in Vienna, which leaves less than a week to hang out with my family and friends in Berlin and sort out all the university stuff I have to do. Very tight schedule, but I am happy about it.

Oh yes, and I think I have an exam in two days? Hmm, maybe I better study for that. Then again, it’s Philosophy, so I might as well watch Doctor Who and call it revision.

All right, I better get back to packing/studying/procrastinating. Will post again as soon a something interesting happens!
