The Life Times of a Student in Porvoo Finland
Hello to all,
Welcome to my first blog, the first of many i hope.
I am a student, studying Tourism, and this year i have been sent to Porvoo, Finland, too continue my studies. I have been living in Porvoo for 3 weeks now and i have to say, my first impressions…… They could not be better. Porvoo is a small town with a population of over just 50,000, and it is approximately 50km to the east of Helsinki.
I arrived here by plane and was taken to my student accommodation by a tutor from the University. When i arrived, i could not believe it, i was in the center of a town, but it was like i was living in the forest. The town can be very quite at times, but everyone is very friendly and it doesn’t lack activities, for example, the number of bars is quite pleasing, Haha.
My accommodation is a long walk to the university, but look what they gave me to solve this problem……

With this bike i am able to see the whole town within a 10 minute bike ride, and i would be lying if i stated i had not broken it once already……. Thats my deposit gone.
The first few weeks i have been getting to know the rest of the exchange students, and Porvoo itself. There are other students from all over Europe, some from Lithuania, some from Germany, others even as far as Greece. I could not be enjoying myself more. We have become fond of a bar on the river bank called Bar Paahtimo. It is on a boat and can be a good place hang out when the weather is good. We have had many bike rides to see the surrounding areas, the furthest we have been was too see the sea. We travelled 29kms, the main reason was to see if we could spot Estonia, only when we arrived, we were shocked to the find a military area, meaning we had to turn around and head back, without seeing the ocean. Luckily the trip was not totally pointless as we discovered some incredible sights along the way. We came across abandoned Boats, and even abandoned houses, which we explored of course, ignoring the law!!!
We have even had day trips to Helsinki, which i must admit, mainly involved drinking a lot, but hey, im student, what else do i do? Haha. But Helsinki is a very nice city with tonnes of exciting things to do. As well as this, the architecture is incredible, there is old historic buildings, next to modern day classic, it really is a nice place to be.
Well, i know this may not be the most interesting blog, but it is my first so give me a break ha!! I am heading to Lapland, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden and Russia within the next few months so keep your eyes on my blog for updates on my trips.
I will do a blog every week just to share the things that have happened here in wonderful Porvoo.
Be safe fellow Bloggers!
