Times Traveling: March 1, 2010

Welcome to Times Traveling, in which Gridskipper tries its ideal to speed things up for you by sifting through the NYT Travel Section and telling you what you need to know.

1) Berkeley: Barbara Ireland reviews the Shattuck Palace Hotel in Berkeley, Ca. “If a hotel can be outspoken, this one is….the decorating borders on the psychedelic. But this is psychedelia through a filter of 21st-century cool, played for fun.” Ireland thinks it’s well-located and finds that the rooms, though on the small side, are “warm and stylish.”

2) Telluride: This week’s 36 Hours is dedicated to Telluride, Co. “A Colorado mining town affixed to a world-class ski resort; rugged locals brushing elbows with the occasional celebrity; white tablecloth restaurants serving up foie gras next to taco dives.” The article mentions expert ski shop Boot Doctors, historic art-house theatre Sheridan Opera House (also the home of the city’s film festival), greasy spoon Maggie’s Bakery, and the newly renovated New Sheridan Hotel, among others.

3) Rome: Danielle Pergament discusses the storied Via Margutta in Rome and how it is reinventing itself as a “design destination.” Pergament highlights Hotel Margutta 54, a luxury suites property, leather shop Saddlers Union, vintage furniture shop Flair, and jewelry store Enigma.

4) London: There is an article about London’s “emerging status as a coffee town.” Picks include Prufrock Coffee, from World Barista Champion Gwilym Davies,Milk Bar, Flat White, and The Espresso Room.
