Expose your children to great ideas of these museums

Anyone who has ever looked aghast when the peanut butter-smeared child Careens toward a priceless work of art know that the kids and the museums do not always mix.

The solution seems to be that when you take a big step in the family, you're stuck museums directed specifically towards the Rugrats. The only problem is that just because you're rearing a baby or two, it does not mean you are going to be fond of shrieking hordes of finger-painters led by a grumpy, underpaid teenage Elmo costume.

There is a middle ground. Somewhere between the quiet reverence and Frick and jumble Sesame Place, there are places where children may be exposed to a brilliant new ideas, and you do not leave until the end and ruing your decision to reproduce.

The good news? There are such places, and they are all over the world. J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles is a perfect example of the art museum, where kids can view the fabulous art and learn new things, and you do not have to deal with dirty looks from nervous dilettantes who think that children should be seen and not heard.

Folk art museums are also known to be positive little people big mouth. Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco, not only encourages children to learn art, but to workshops where they can create their own art. Categories African-American quilts, pottery of ancient Greece and India, palm leaf bookmaking not only teach children how, but to enlighten them with cultures and places they may never have heard of it. And you can have a relaxing stroll through the galleries when they are busy.

All through the parent company in New York City would be remiss not to visit the American Museum of Natural History, if only to marvel at the giant blue whale that hangs in the entrance hall, and its rich collection of dioramas.

But there are other, quirky choices in the Big Apple. Places like the New York Transit Museum, where your little one can study art on the subway and station design, the actual subway station. Or take the ferry to Ellis Island and learn what it was like when his great, great, great grandparents came to the U.S. All of these options are equally enjoyable for you as they are the little guys.

Believe it or not, it's even easier to get a bit of culture in your kiddies and abroad. (For starters, there's a good chance you will not be interpreted, if someone speaks your horribly behaved children anyway, so who cares? If a tree falls in the woods …) And if you stick a giant ancient structures – such as the Acropolis, for example – you can relax knowing that it your child is almost impossible to break anything.
