Accommodation review | Balbegno Castle, Kincardineshire, Scotland

A medieval Scottish castle provides a nice holiday home – and the restoration by the team behind Pedlars has added some modern comforts

Scottish castles for rent often look cheesy movie sets – all tartan antlers and jaw with four posters. Yes – I see antlers on the site for Balbegno castle, which came on the holiday scene this year, but that's where stereotype ends. There Gothic hardware and knicker-ish no frills.

On paper, see the directions to the castle (between Aberdeen and Dundee, east of the Cairngorms) well to consider not how low-key character is really from the streets – especially at dusk. Grrrr.

A Smart Box is welcome in the rustic luxury kitchen is waiting. Cheese, chocolate brownies, posh crackers, olives, relish, and Belgian chocolate. The cheese we put on nibbling, like a pair of mice, is Welsh. This is because Balbegno owners (descendants of William Gladstone, no less), an organic farm in Wales. She also began Pedlars – best for the implementation of Keep Calm and Carry On on everything from mugs ceiling known.

"The kitchen is Ikea, but I've seen most of the other items on the website Pedlars," D says with authority that they do Christmas shopping online. The orange bread box fits the bin that will fit a cake pan.

"Come on, let's explore," I say. Our quarters are in an 18th Century wing. Two floors, four bedrooms upstairs and two down (the only girlie all my favorite in the entire house). An old pantry houses a game room, first floor lounge of the classic Georgian part, on the ground floor dining room for festive roast and the kind of breakfast, find someone to get up and walk pass the butter.

The bathrooms are in very small range – just a floor and a shower room on ground floor – but the story (Gladstone family memorabilia), co-exists with modern comforts (good beds, Bose sound system) and a humorous Pedlars poster. Someone had the discipline can speak to the place for themselves.

This is a house of two halves, though. What we will find Balbegno memorable.

By a heavy door from the entrance hall (more coconut mat here as the average of the school), we find ourselves in the tower, the original castle, built in the 1560s in typical L-plan. Tip Tap, we mount the stone steps. Brrr, cold.

No wonder. Switching to a fantastic glittering light shows a medieval hall, with its stone arches still centuries old heraldic jewelry.

Atmosphere? You can cut with a knife. We are amazed at this bit was not sealed off. Instead, we have the vision could dance a fire, a party to the massive table that runs the length of the hall.

Now we understand why one of the bedrooms upstairs feels so different from everyone else. It is from the Georgian wing "next door" access, but a few steps from the first floor landing, it is indeed in the original tower house. It is almost 300 years older than the rest.

"We need oil," says D angrily back into the kitchen and 21 Century. "It would be useful to have the opening times of a local business. And a vegetable peeler. And a potato masher." If they would have given it a proper test run they made, what was missing.

"I have, as they wrapped some good DVD's in a drawer like," she says later in the living room, where we roll up next to a peat fire, covered in pin-striped armchair under portraits of men with aquiline noses. What is the best thing is the way for today's feast Balbegno in a setting, the story focuses abounds. D sums it up. "It's just a beautiful place."
