B & B Rating: Upton House, Fowey, Cornwall
This unique, stylish but totally kitsch in Cornwall B & B offers an entertaining antidote to the stuffiness inn
"Have you seen this B & B? Looks wild," says the e-mail. Upton House is a web site will show breakfast. Damn – this makes a change from jam and fried eggs.
Two women in roller skates around a cake stand full of buns and waffles. One seems to be wearing a bunnygirl, other than Alice in Wonderland and the fascinator. Click. Click. What is the quickest route to Fowey?
You just can not help noticing Upton House. It is pink. And you can not miss its owner, Angelique Thompson, who opens the door and silk dress, fishnets, false eyelashes and a ribbon-tie platform shoes. Nobody would notice the Carnaby Street, but the Fowey, Cornwall, where the cagoule is de rigueur, he cut quite a dash.
He grabs my bags, hop into my car, and directs me to a free parking lot, then speed back down the dizzying streets of his impossible shoes without so much as wobble. Victoria Beckham would weep.
Austrian born interior designer, Angelique and her husband Paul bought a summer house here first, then decided to move here permanently. Upton House is a shop on the ground floor, is now presenting Angelique's Interiors business (B & B's unorthodox style).
Do I have in mind when he just closes? I look forward to among the custom-made furniture (moleskin velvet chairs, dark gray-painted kitchen cabinets), a bold wallpaper, white fluffy rabbits (she looks like a lot of these: I find in my room) and a selection of Chinese adorned with slender legs, which one would expect something more mundane, such as the handle. Tassels, long purple flowers and painting complete the look.
Shop secure, we will get past the suggestively dark woodwork and walls until we get to my all-white snow Bubble Room on the second floor. Glitter Ball light cast sparkles like snowflakes on the entire roof and catch jeweled white leather bedhead. The legs are sheep. 1960 bucket seat from the ceiling does not invite one to ponder a poor state, but slide against the pound sequined cushions and think more frivolous thoughts. Oh, the bathroom is one of those egg-shaped baths (unfortunately lost – this time – is a solo swimmer).
For the price, this is not a huge bedroom. Penhaligons toiletries seem a safe choice, and hand-made bed linens deserves better than self-stripe cotton, which was never up the irons crisply. Mini Fridge hanging space for compromise, and I'm not surprised to find a pair of padded hangers and wooden.
Website due to the descriptions of models, I learned over tea in a velvet sofa-ED Music Room. All are Fowey (think of regattas, Daphne du Maurier Festival), Upton House considers a resource the city, though. Some (apparently) Suspect Angelique running Bordello. If so, this is the first of which Visit Britain has granted five stars.
The visit is a whirl of chatter, fluttering eyelashes and a cake (banana bread with chocolate spread for breakfast, anyone?). "Oh – a breakfast room, dining room – so boring," Angelique says, catching me by taking photos dining room door (sign says "Let Them Eat Cake").
Trio breakfast sausage (the menu says Upton Threesome) is a local butcher, and simply delicious. He may be new to this, but Angelique – which offers up to turndown service – to know what he is doing. Yes, it is kitsch, but it is also an antidote to all those places that take the oh-so-seriously. Right now, there is no little laugh, what we all need?
