B & B Rating: Upton House, Fowey, Cornwall

This unique, elegant but quite kitsch in Cornwall B & B offers an antidote to congestion entertaining Guesthouse

"Given the B & B? Looks wild," says one e-mail. On the website of the Upton House I click on Breakfast. Blimey – which makes a change from jam and fried eggs.

Two women on roller skates are surrounded by the cake is loaded with bread and waffles. One seems to be dressed like a bunnygirl, the other as Alice in Wonderland in a fascinating. Click. Click. What is the quickest way to Fowey?

You can not miss Upton House. It's pink. And you can not miss its owner, Angelique Thompson, who answers the door in a silk dress, fishnets, false eyelashes and platform shoes ribbon tie. Nobody blinked on Carnaby Street, but in Fowey, where the hood is required, it cuts a good dashboard.

It sticks to the inside of my bag, jump in my car and head for free parking, and then progress down steep streets in his shoes impossible without oscillation. Victoria Beckham began to cry.

Born in Austria Angelique interior designer and her husband Paul bought a second home here first, then decided to settle here permanently. Upton House is a shop on the ground floor, now a showcase for the internal affairs of Angelique (and unconventional style B & B).

Do I mind as she closes just above? I expect one of the custom furniture (taupe velvet chairs, chests painted black in gray), wallpapers fat, sweet white rabbits (she seems very fond of them: I find in my room) and a range of porcelain decorated with slender legs where we could expect something more mundane like a sleeve. Acorns, flowers and tall purple paint complete the look.

Shop securely, we ride past dark wood walls and suggestive to reach my all-white snow Bubble Room on the second floor. A light mirror ball throwing sparkles like snowflakes through the ceiling and catches of the headboard white leather jewelry. Underfoot is sheepskin. 1960 tub chair suspended from the ceiling invites one not to reflect on the alarming state of the book, but to lean against pillows with sequins and more frivolous thoughts. Ooh, the bathroom has a bath of egg-shaped (unfortunately lost – on this occasion – the solo swimmer).

For the price, it's not a very large room. Penhaligons toiletries seem a safe choice, and the hand towels mattress deserves better than cotton bed self-piste never irons until crisp. The mini-fridge compromises the closet, and I am surprised not to find a pair of padded hangers with wooden ones.

The site was the result of a photoshoot with models, I learn more tea in the music room with velvet sofa ed. Not everyone in Fowey (think racing, Daphne du Maurier festival) Upton House considers an asset to the city, however. Some (apparently) Angelique suspected of running a brothel. If so, this is the first that Visit Britain has awarded five stars.

My stay was a whirlwind of gossip, fluttering eyelashes and cake (banana bread with chocolate spread for breakfast, anyone?). "Oh – breakfast room, dining room – so boring," says Angelique, catch me taking photographs of the dining room door (the sign says, "Let Them Eat Cake").

The trio of sausage breakfast (menu says Upton Trio) are made by a local butcher and simply delicious. It may be new to this, but Angelique – which even offers a preparation service – knows what it does. Yes, it's kitsch, but it is also an antidote to all these places that are oh so seriously. At this time, not just laugh exactly what we all need?
