B & B Review: Holly Bush Inn, Hexham, Northumberland

Hostel A simple passage of flocks in Northumberland National Park is a great place to hunker down in winter, but the kitchen should be focused on the hearty, unpretentious food makes better

"Welcome to Greenhaugh. Slow down or lose it," says a weathered roadside sign. You can not miss the Holly Bush Inn – there is only one way. Clare enters, then a publican Mary Parker shows, in linen, hand stretched welcome.

"I've put in the cottage along here," says our feet up the road. "Just my bottom and the two of you up." I have a skylight, and can be seen outside in the fields and hills. Clare bags in the room with the larger bathroom.

Rooms are quite and friendly, the shower is all white and Wi-Fi is free. The twiddly bit lacking for the blind and curtains do not quite meet in the middle, but a dear little room, made on a shoestring I bet.

Here in Northumberland National Park, we reload (phone, camera, laptop, ourselves), make the tea and move through the room information. Uh-oh, pubs do not take cards – fast, how much money have we brought?

WHAT TO DO IN THE AREA – from locals

Frances Whitehead, Communications Officer, Northumberland National Park

Take a bicycle ride around the water Kielder – one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, which boasts of cycle routes to suit all levels. You can rent bicycles from the Place Bike in Kielder (01434 250457, thebikeplace.co.uk, adults £ 15, children 10 euros for half day rental).
Mary Parker, the owner, Holly Bush Inn

Hidden in a wooded valley two miles south of Hexham inn is a former passage of herds, the Dipton Mill (01434 606577, diptonmill.co.uk). Try homebrew the tax collector, the water of the devil, or tuck into a home-cooked meal while sitting on one of our cozy fireplaces. It is a very friendly atmosphere – great to spend a lazy afternoon – or Wednesday night when night quiz.
Graham Usher, Rector, Hexham Abbey

There are some beautiful walks Greenhaugh with breathtaking views over heather moor. I especially like the one that takes you from the Holly Bush Inn down a path through some ancient woodland and hay meadows in Burn Tarset, with only the sounds of water and birdsong for company. FW
