B & B Review: The Holly Bush Inn, Hexham, Northumberland
Hotel simple mushers "in the Northumberland National Park is the perfect place to hunker down in winter, but the kitchen should concentrate on the warm, unpretentious food at her best
"Welcome to Greenhaugh. Slow down or you'll miss it," says a roadside sign of weathering. Do not miss the Holly Bush Inn – there is only one street. Claire arrives, the publican, Mary Parker appears in a white linen, hand outstretched in welcome.
"I have placed you in a cottage together here," she says, walking us up the street. "Just me down and the two of you." I clearance, and can look out into the fields and hills. Claire bag room with the large bathroom.
Bed and quite inviting, shower room and all the white and Wi-Fi is free. Twiddly little to no blind and curtains do not quite meet in the middle, but it is an expensive little place, done on a shoestring, I'll bet.
Here in Northumberland National Park, we charge (phone, camera, laptop, we do), make tea and flip through numbers. Oh, the pub does not accept – fast, how much money have we brought?

Take a bike ride around Kielder Water – one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, which boasts the bike lanes to accommodate all levels. You can rent a bike from a bicycle in Kielder Place (01434 250457, thebikeplace.co.uk, adults £ 15, £ 10 children to hire half the working day).

Hidden in the wooded valley about two miles south of Hexham is a former drovers' hotel, Dipton Mill (01434 606577, diptonmill.co.uk). Homebrew Try publican, Water Devil, or tuck into home-cooked meal, sitting on one of the cozy fire magazine. This is a very nice place – great to spend a leisurely lunch – or Wednesday evening as he quizzes the night.

There are some beautiful walks Greenhaugh with magnificent views of the surrounding heather moors. I especially like the one that takes you from the Holly Bush Inn down the path through the woods and meadows of hay, some ancient record Tarset, with only the sounds of water and birds for company. FW
