B & B review: The Holly Bush Inn, Hexham

A simple drovers inn "in Northumberland National Park is a great place to take shelter in winter, but the kitchen should focus on comfort food, unpretentious, you do best

"Welcome to Greenhaugh. Slow down or you'll miss it," says a degraded road sign. Do not miss the Holly Bush Inn – there is only one street. Clara comes, then Mary Parker collector surfaces, white linen, hand outstretched in welcome.

"I have made in the cottage over here," she says, walking with us on the street. "I just up the stairs and the two of you." I have a skylight, and you can peer into the fields and hills. Clare bags in the room with the biggest bathroom.

The bed is nice and cozy bathroom is all white and Wi-Fi is free. Twiddly bit of the blind is gone and the curtains do not come to meet in the middle, but it is a room of my dear, until I'm sure with little money.

Here in Northumberland National Park, it recharges (phones, cameras, laptops, ourselves), tea and flick through the information in the room. Uh-oh, pub does not accept – fast, how much money we bring?

Occasionally we see someone cross the street and disappear into the pub. It's time to follow his example. In a room with a bar and wooden tables for two, a majority of seats (and probably the people) appears to be arranged around one of them. A fire is burning in a wide black in the center – but once we sit, we can see another room, with tables set behind him. There is something slightly feminized simple on the inside, a little elegant but not fluffy. I love to dig in the inn of the livestock in winter.

"A lot of people walk," Zoe waitress tells me, between pulling pints backchat and Boddingtons and Top Tup. "Some come back saying that he has walked Hadrian's Wall is miles -. Why did it", he says, grimacing. They have eight walks from the pub, says Maria, who shows us brochures. She cheerfully admits that doing B & B is vital for business.

One option for the board leg of lamb, mashed potatoes and vegetables in a sauce of rosemary and green Thai curry vegetables. These are served in a third room (there is more to this place than meets the eye), fashion painted tin. Good lamb, smooth paste, reports of Clare, and "sauce is tasty, but can not detect any rosemary". I'm just admiring her carrot sticks such orderly and uniform. Thai Curry reminds me of a Chinese mishandling – broccoli and yellow peppers in a colorless gloop with a sprig of cilantro on top – through a side of surprise, some homemade naan bread is quite good . We skipped puddings, because when we asked the girl who brings the food, she says she bought in

If the existence of this village pub is dependent on visitors more reason to make sure it is a destination. Well after a fun day outdoors is one of the greatest pleasures that the British have, and people return again and again for good food, unpretentious. If unpretentious is what the kitchen can do better, that's what you should stick to, especially in an atmosphere of rustic simplicity. The use of fresh produce first class, of course.

It keeps the light for hours – but we're tired of walking wilderness before lapwings and curlews between. At the time they appear at breakfast, Clare has snarfed a complete English and is sitting in the garden. Cereals and jars are placed on a very Victorian chest drawers in the middle room. Jams and brown sliced packages are disappointments, but Zoe has cooked eggs. Balance restored.

WHAT TO DO IN THE AREA – by locals

Take a bike ride around Kielder Water – one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, which has bike trails for all levels. You can rent bicycles in the bicycle Kielder Square (01434 250457, thebikeplace.co.uk, adults £ 15 children £ 10 average rent for one day).

Hidden in a wooded valley, two miles south of Hexham is a former drovers inn, the Dipton Mill (01434 606577, diptonmill.co.uk). Try to homebrew the collector, the Devil's water, or enjoy a home cooked meal while sitting in one of the cozy fireplaces. It is a very cozy – perfect for a leisurely lunch – or a Wednesday night after dark questionnaire.
Graham Usher, Rector, Hexham Abbey

There are some nice walks around Greenhaugh with excellent views of the surrounding heaths. I especially like that takes you from the Holly Bush Hotel on a trail through an ancient woodland and meadows of hay for the Tarset Burn, with only the sounds of water and birdsong for company. FW
