Opened in 2009 in a converted townhouse, 1890, has seven double rooms with a beautiful custom, locally made beds, wallpaper and decorated mirrors feature original fireplaces as well. The salon is newspapers, books, flatscreen TV, DVD player and a simple well-stocked bar.

"Expect the unexpected," say the eccentric owners of this B & B a short walk from the Markt. Les Cigognes, Normandy, France

This charming thatched house in the heart of Normandy Boucles de la Seine Normande Regional Park. It has four rooms with walls of lime, wood beams and eclectic furniture, antique trunks from a tailor's dummies in wrought iron. Ask the owners friendly basketball bicycle and picnic (complete with fresh produce) – perfect for a day cycling through the park.

Le Sénéchal, Ile de Ré, France

This jewel in the village of Ars en Ré, is one of the most beautiful and accessible hotel on the Ile de Ré. This newly renovated four-star hotel in the lively El Carmen is a bargain. It 's too trendy, with 25 double rooms decorated in orange, blue, red or black, with exposed wood flooring, funky lighting, plasma TVs, striking modern artwork and plush bathroom. But the highlight must be the rooftop terrace with heated Jacuzzi and sweeping views of the city.

Search do Sul, São Teotónio, Portugal

This family-run B & B in Portugal, Costa Vicentina has an ocean view on the way and the other picturesque Monchique. Its seven double rooms have white walls, tiled floors and printed in bold stripes, all with flat screen TV. Dahlia Inn, Prague, Czech Republic

Only € 25 for a double to the center of this famous city? It 's true. The Dahlia Inn is too elegant funky purple and lime green eight double chairs are made of Plexiglas, enormous flower prints on the walls, king-size beds, flat screen TV and a minibar. The red city has its share of beautiful riad, but this has opened up last month, is in the heart of the medina and has four bedrooms in a traditional style with stone walls, tiled floors and light throws. After a day hunting for bargains, take a dip in the heated pool in the courtyard, before watching the sunset from the roof terrace.

Kendwa Rocks, Kendwa, Zanzibar

The name says it all. This laid-back board on the beach is one of the most beautiful island (although in reality it takes its name from the coral rock near the beach). Panjim Inn, Panjim Pousada, Goa, India

Hidden among the narrow streets of the Latin Quarter in Panaji, the capital of Goa, this grand colonial residence of the dates 1800 and is still owned by the family from Goa. Each of its 24 rooms has a wonderful old world charm, with antique furniture, family photos sepia and (in some) carved four-poster beds. The same family runs the beautiful Panjim Pousada across the street, an old Hindu house with nine rooms.

After the successful 2006 launch of Luxx 13-room hotel in Bangkok's Central Business District, 2009 saw the opening of Luxx XL on Langsuan Road, near Lumpini Park. You guessed it, is bigger, with 51 rooms, but just as chic, mixing in polished teak, slate and stainless steel with locally crafted furniture and minimalist bathrooms. It also has an infinity pool and garden, dominated by a York-style bar new glass. Mai Tai cocktail, anyone?

The Apsara, Luang Prabang, Laos

This stunning former rice on the banks of the Nam Khan (in a quieter part of town) is now a chic hotel. Its 13 double rooms on two brothels mix windows and large comfortable beds with local art, voile curtains and glass statues of Buddha. There is an elegant bar (excellent cocktails) and its restaurant is excellent.

Mysteries & Mekong, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

This colonial-style villa has been converted into a pension in 2009, and despite being in the heart of the capital, feels wonderfully secluded in lush gardens. The 18 double rooms with bathroom tiles combine bright and fancy silk throws with four-poster beds, full-length windows and private terraces – perfect for outdoor dining. There is also a new outdoor pool.

Puri Mas Boutique Resort & Spa, Lombok, Indonesia

It may be just a stone's throw from the beach sandal Senggigi busy, but this place is idyllic as they come. Owned by a ballroom dancer in the Netherlands, has 20 rooms and suites along the beach and jungle, with antique furniture, king-size four-poster Balinese bathrooms. Chill in the infinity pool or reserve a dance lesson with the owner.
