Camping in the city – London Zoo plans posh camping
Safari-style tents at the London Zoo is the latest quirky accommodation in the capital
With Posh camping is spreading like wildfire through the British countryside, it was only a matter of time before some clever clogs came up with a way to glamp in the city.
But where to go luxury tents in an urban environment?
London Zoo has stepped in with the answer: in the earshot of some wild animals. The zoo is already sleepovers for children, where children are in bed on the floor of his bug house (sold out this year, 2012 tickets go on sale in mid-October). Now it is introducing a more sophisticated version for adults.
For five days in May 2012, eight safari style tents will be erected in the middle of the zoo. These are classy tents – with a hefty price tag to match (£ 225 per person, call 0207 449 6269 to book) – they come with proper beds with sheets and light bed. Following a three-course meal, you will be taken on a torch-lit guided tour, then it's lights out at midnight, with the roaring lion to lull you to sleep. In the morning, breakfast followed by another tour before the zoo opens to the public.
The announcement of zoo camp comes hot on the heels of the opening of reservations for a room with a view at the top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank in London. The boat-shaped installation began life as a design project created by Alain de Botton's Living Architecture systems and has an upper and lower decks, "bridge" with a library and a flag you raise to signal your presence.
The first six months was sold out when bookings opened on September 8, so if you like the idea of staring out over the River Thames on one of the best views in London, pencil, January 19, 2012 in your diary – it opened for the second part of the reservation , from July to December.
Regardless of weather you can guarantee that there will be a tone king city views from Big Ben to St Paul's – and you may be lucky enough to see a rainbow – sounds a bit silly, but check out this collection of lists website Londonist and you can be very well be hoping for rain and shine as you head to the roof to check in.
In the meantime, let's hope the rain keeps up this weekend to walk london's bumper crop of free events all over town, from one and a half mil stroll along the hidden alleys of the city to the 21-mile Green Chain Mega Walk through east London.
The zoo camping is one of a number of events that were rejected by the London Tourist Board & Partners in Trafalgar Square on September 26.
