China launches second aircraft carrier – as a luxury hotel
As the sea trials of Varyag affecting the region, using Binhai Aircraft Park China's growing military power to appeal to curious visitors
While the experts' eyes may be on the test drive in Varyag has another ship made waves in the Chinese media.
Just as Varyag is Kiev a former Soviet aircraft carrier. As Varyag – probably bought to serve as a floating casino – the buyers said they wanted to make it a recreational facility.
The difference is that Kiev is truly welcome guests, proudly billed as China's first aircraft carrier hotel.
Owner of Binhai Aircraft Park believe that China's growing military power will drum up customers' interest.
"Previously, China did not have aircraft carriers. People think that the mysterious and are curious about them. Even if China's first aircraft carrier is now on trial run, it will be quite difficult for the public to ever visit it," said marketing manager Liu Chang. "I guess people can come here to satisfy their curiosity."
Prices to stay in one of five lavish Presidential Suites has not yet set, but designers seem to have shunned the standard marine decor in favor of something more luxurious. Pictures of a show a large white circular bed, silver Lame curtains and a carpet cowskin.
The South China Morning Post reported that its owner had spent nearly 100 million yuan (£ 9.6 million) on renovations – still slightly less than the cost of refitting Varyag.
