Croatia's top five holiday islands
Beautiful islands of Croatia tend to get overrun in peak season, but the end of August and September are the perfect time to enjoy the hot springs, ancient cities and fantastic food
Vis is an ideal getaway romantic. As well as you tuck away on one of the many spectacular and secluded bays, you can visit the island and discover its many vineyards, palms, pines, olive trees, oleanders, fig trees, carob trees and mulberry trees, and over 300 herbs (ideal for self-catering), seafood and local wines. My favorite "home" restaurant (such as sites that use only local or produce eco-known) is Stoncica Bay. Led by brothers Lince, overlooking an idyllic bay. Both are Kantun the end of the city of Kut Vis, and for a romantic meal, palm-filled Arboretum bar-restaurant of the Villa Kaliopa (V Nazora 32, 385 21711755) is a magical setting.
For food, try Maje U i Tonks, a few meters from the port of the old town. His "tapas Dalmatian", all made from local products (goat cheese, ham, fish pie, eggplant) the cost of 30kN (3.75 pounds) and has great local wines. For the barbecue outside traditional Dalmatian fish or cevapcici (heels tasty pork sausages, lamb or beef minced), try Planjak on the edge of the old town near the ferry terminal, from £ 6.

Best for relaxation: Mali Losinj
Located in the Kvarner region of the northern Adriatic, and accessible by ferry from Zadar, Mali Losinj is an island in an archipelago of more than 30 small islands. The color of the sea is an amazing deep green as the island is heavily wooded. For this reason, it is known as the island of vitality, ideal for those who need a break to rejuvenate.
Pag is famous for its lunar landscape beautiful, isolated coves, and cheese, lamb, lace, and salt. For peaceful, rocky bays, you should aim Proboj, although the best of all is LUN on the northern tip of the island. The city (with an Illyrian and Roman past) also has vineyards and olive trees, grass and salt (strong sea winds) gives the sheep's cheese and meat its flavor. Visit of a cheese family Sirana Gligora (sirena.hr), in the village of Kolan and in the town of Pag, there is a salt museum and a gallery of traditional lace. So here is the small, friendly Dalmatian style Konoba Bile (Jurij Dalmatinca 35, 385 23611127, konoba means tavern), serving local prsut (double Dalmatian smoked ham), sardines, the famous cheese, brandy and wines. You can also hear the people sing traditional songs.
As in the rest of Dalmatia, large hotels are to be avoided, it is much more interesting (and cheaper) to stay in family pension as the pension Gea (+ 385 23 6002 72 geajurkopag.com, doubles from € 32) which has spacious rooms and is located 10 minutes from the old town.
The ferry arrives in the old town, Stari Grad, located at the bottom of a magnificent five mile long bay, sheltered by densely wooded hills. The city was founded in the year of birth of Aristotle (384BC), and is a maze of stone streets, along which Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson, once lost. They also dined in the restaurant Jurin Podrum (Donja Kola 24, 385 21,765,448, established in 1917), which now serves seafood dishes new local cuisine (from grouper to shrimp stew of octopus with olive bread house), followed by lavender flower-deserts.
In the center of the city is Tvrdalj Castle, home of the 16th century poet, Petar Hektorovic. It has a round, a Baroque portal, a pond teeming with mullet and an exquisite garden. Stay in the old town, near the tower of the majestic St-Etienne, San Nicolas Apartments (3 Bartola Kasic, 385 91 915 2705, studios for two from € 40 per night).
If you want to join the crowd in the middle parts designer exquisite Venetian and Austrian architecture, take a bus 20 minutes from the town of Hvar. In high season the town is heaving with Italians, non-stop party posers, and most recently English snob boaters. Never better (+385 91 4636120, better.net never a bed of flags from € 30 per night) is just steps from the port.
When you are tired of bars and boutiques of Hvar, visit the 17th century theater, and the Arsenal of the 13th century (when used for repairing war galleys), where you will find a gallery of great art, Hvaroom (hvaroom.com) and a café. Most of the nightlife is pretty in-your-face, but in an alley off the port Indie Kiva Club Bar has an old oak flooring recently installed and is ideal for cooler clientele, good music and cocktails. Or watch the yachts (and celebrities) in the port in terms of Caffe Gromit relaxing (yes, named after the dog in clay!)
