Hotels: The Charles Bathurst Inn, The Ark Garth Dale, North Yorkshire

Deep in the Yorkshire Dales, a 18th-century inn offers local ale, homemade food – and quoits

The glory of the Yorkshire Dales. Hardy sheep glance as we pass. Up, up, the yarn path as a gray ribbon around Reeth Moor, then downwards to a current (and through it, actually) at Arkengarthdale.

It is in this tributary valley of Swaledale we'll find whitewashed Charles Bathurst Inn, a freehouse with 19 bedrooms. Dr John Bathurst was a doctor Oliver Cromwell, but this is after a descendant, Charles, a significant number of local lead, the 18th-century inn is named.

Few regular support line. "Number 24 is your table," says the bartender, taking us by surprise when the check in "It's through there," he says, understanding, suggesting a dining room on the edge of the bar, then reassures us that we can recall later if you forget it. Well, you could just after our trip.

Over a Black Sheep ale Riggwelter, we study the chalked-up menu at the bar. Table 29 (one in 24) is less than vintage photos of the inn, and a table for four, whose hearing disorder on whether the Trans-Siberian Express has a shower in our vessel has been stifling laughs.
