Hotels: The Plough, Lupton, Lake District

An old pub Lake District has been gutted and turned into a restaurant with five rooms of luxury. Sally Shalam impressed … with one or two exceptions

There have been six years since the cabbed from Kendal station in tiny Crosthwaite and Punchbowl Inn, both new (well, until recently tarted) still had a faint murmur of color. Restaurant and bedrooms is due more to the Hotel du Vin school interior by spit'n'sawdust fell walkers. " More thoroughly modern pub grub of Cumbria boutique opened its doors.

The company was founded, Punchbowl Inns, and last year added half a bar, The Plough in Lupton. Pub and restaurant opened in June 2010, he joined, now, with five bedrooms (created from the previous 11) and sixth – occupies the entire top floor, although there is nothing to see yet – still to be completed.

Now we can show upstairs. Wi-Fi is free, soft carpet, windows dressed with blinds and curtains, free tea and coffee can be ordered any time there is a turn-down service. Whoopee.

"I wish I had brought my essential oils," says Clare, when he realizes that there is nothing to put in a giant bath. If the shelf edge in the bathroom I had only a fraction wider, I could have put me in a bath , but the only real minus is the main street. I imagine the rooms at the back are quieter.

"This is going to be good," says Clare with an expectant glow. Berry and rhubarb crumble is pleasantly sour while cranachan – accumulate, silkily, tenderness, in a small jar Kilner – is so sweet that you can go.
