Reviews: The Charles Bathurst Inn, Arkengarthdale, North Yorkshire

Deep in the Yorkshire Dales, the 18th-century hotel offering local ales, homemade food – and quoits

Glory Yorkshire Dales. Hardy sheep look up, as we pass. Up, up the road so as gray ribbon through Reeth Moor, then down through the stream (well, through it, actually) in Arkengarthdale.

It is in this valley of Swaledale flow, we find that whites Charles Bathurst Inn, freehouse with 19 bedrooms. Dr John Bathurst was a doctor, Oliver Cromwell, but after a descendant of Charles, an important figure in the local production of lead, that 18th-century hotel is named.

A few regulars propping up the bar are. "Your table number is 24," says the barmaid, taking us by surprise, when we leave, "It is through him," she said, by explaining, showing the dining room at the far end of the bar, it convinces us that it can remind us later if we forget . Well, we could just after our trip.

The black sheep ale Riggwelter, we carefully chalked menu at the bar. Table 29 (one in 24) is under the old photos of the hotel, and a table of four people who had heard about the campaign, the Trans-Siberian Express has a shower on board is stifling our giggles.
