Score: Dewsall Justice Callow, Herefordshire
Relaxed, house-guest of vibration is only one pleasure in this country house turned hotel pop. If they get food right, it will be a keeper
The trail passes the farm buildings, leads to a disk, soaring sandstone walls of the skirt of the 17th century Dewsall court and brings me to the kitchen terrace, situated around an old tree yew. From the kitchen door, the garden is rolled back to the barn, a pond and a tiny church. Lupines, foxgloves and poppies crowd of deep borders. Rose walks, birds sing.
I swept the house of Joseph Robinson, the brother of Samantha. Then Julian Vaughn, husband of Samantha, is, and that Samantha herself and her mother, Jane. Hotel or Houseparty? I would venture, do both.
Downstairs in the hall (which is actually a living room), I recline against pillows on a sofa next to fat underwear huge peony arrangement, until I called to dinner. You know what? This is heaven.
"He was always a busy house," she tells me over tea in the vast kitchen, "a lot of people." So it was decided to keep it that way, creating a pop-up hotel – manageably rare occurrence in the provision of housing – for local events. One of which, of course, Hay Festival of Literature.
It helps that the family is born hosts, but when the audience comes to stay you not only have the mass of bathrooms, but the material is fire safety. This is an expensive business in the old building – but they did it.
When the court receives Dewsall it right, whether you call this part the hotel, instant B & B or pop a piece of paradise, it will completely rock.
