"Expect the Unexpected", say the eccentric owners of this B & B a short walk from the Markt. It has two bedrooms with en kitsch (one double, one triple) filled with dolls, mannequins, paintings and works of art from around the world. Les Cigognes, France Normandy

This charming thatched house in the heart of Normandy Seine Normande Boucles regional park. It has four rooms with whitewashed walls, wooden beams and eclectic furnishings, from antique chests tailors' dummies wrought iron. Ask the owners about renting the bicycle basket and picnic (complete with farm-fresh) – perfect for a day cycling in the park.

Le Sénéchal, Ile-de-Ré, France

This jewel in the town of Ars-en-Ré, is one of the most beautiful and affordable hotels on the island of Ré. Its 27 rooms and suites, all with different shapes and sizes, have brick walls, wooden floors and rustic furniture, and some have fireplaces, separate bathrooms and sea views. Acta del Carmen Hotel, Valencia, Spain

This newly renovated four-star hotel in the trendy area of El Carmen is a bargain. It is very elegant, with 25 rooms decorated in orange, blue, red or black, with exposed wooden floors, funky lighting, plasma TVs, striking modern artwork and luxurious bathroom. But the workhorse has to be the roof terrace with jacuzzi pool and panoramic city views.

Close do Sul, São Teotónio, Portugal

This family run B & B in the Costa Vicentina in Portugal with sea views in a picturesque Monchique other. Its seven double rooms have white walls, terracotta floors and striped patterns, all with flat screen TV. There are also communal living and dining room, a chill-out room full of games and an outdoor pool. Speak to the owners about bike rentals, surf lessons and horseback riding.

Right in the center of Old Town, this charming hotel occupies two floors of the building that was first licensed house in Riga – opened in 1435 and later used as a sanctuary for the wives of artisans of the city. It has 11 comfortable double rooms, some facing the church of San Pedro, others to a quiet courtyard. All have wooden floors, hand-woven bedspreads and small bathrooms as they once were the cabinets of widows.

Dahlia Inn, Prague, Czech Republic

Only € 25 for a double in the center of this city popular? It's true. The Dahlia Inn is also elegant: green eight funky purple and lime double Plexiglass have chairs, huge flower prints on the walls, king size beds, flat screen TV and minibar. Breakfast is extra (4 €), but there are many cafes on Wenceslas Square, five minutes.

Saudi Riad in Marrakech, Morocco

The Red City has its share of beautiful riads, but it opened last month, is at the heart of the medina and has four rooms in traditional style with stone walls, tiled floors and bright lance. After a day of bargain hunting, take a dip in the heated pool in the courtyard before you see the sunset from the terrace.

Kendwa Rocks, Kendwa, Zanzibar

The name says it all. This tranquil oceanfront inn is one of the best on the island (although it is actually the name of the coral rocks behind the beach). Its 28 suites, bungalows and bands (log cabins) have carved wooden four-poster and bright fabrics, with hammocks on the terrace. The beach comes alive every night, travelers flock to the simple bars, and there is a monthly celebration of the full moon.

This welcoming hotel is located in the beach town of Varkala soft. It has four double rooms with bath filled with elements of travel of the owners (Tuscany cabinets, chandeliers Byzantine style Thai statues of Buddha), each with its own terrace. There is also a shady garden with a lily pond.

Panjim Inn and Posada Panjim, Goa, India

Hidden in the alleys of the Latin Quarter in Panaji, the capital of Goa, this large colonial house, dating from early 1800 and is still owned by the original family of Goa. Each of its 24 rooms has a wonderful old world charm, with antique furniture, sepia photos of the family and (some) carved canopies. The same family runs the beautiful Panjim Pousada across the road, an old Indian house with nine rooms.

Following the successful launch in 2006 of the Luxx hotel of 13 rooms in the Central Business District of Bangkok, in 2009 the opening of XL Luxx in Langsuan Road, near Lumpini Park. You guessed it, is bigger, with 51 rooms, but equally elegant, brilliant blend of teak, slate and stainless steel with local handmade furniture and minimalist bathrooms. The Apsara, Luang Prabang, Laos

This impressive former rice warehouse on the banks of the Nam Khan (the quietest area of the city) is now an elegant hotel. Its 13 double rooms through two windows closed mix of houses and large comfortable beds with local art, voile curtains and statues of Buddha made of glass. There is an elegant bar (cocktails) and the restaurant is excellent.

Mystères and the Mekong, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

This colonial-style villa was converted into a guesthouse in 2009, despite being in the heart of the capital, it feels wonderfully secluded in lush gardens. The 18 double rooms with bath combine bright floor tiles, silk throws with four poster beds, large windows and private balconies – perfect for outdoor breakfasts. There is also a new outdoor pool.

Puri Mas Boutique Resort & Spa, Lombok, Indonesia

It may be just a sandal away from Senggigi beach busy, but this place is so idyllic as they come. Property of a ballroom dancer from the Netherlands, has 20 rooms and suites along the beach and jungle, with antiques, four poster king-size baths and Bali. Chill by the pool or reserve a dance class with the owner.
