Aljun Castle
Ahlan!
I wanted to try to write this journal entry yesterday, but unfortunately my Hostel lost world wide web service last night. Anyway, yesterday all Qasid students had the astonishing chance to travel to Aljun/Aljoun Castle as an orientation field trip. That meant piling into buses and taking an hour and a half trip north of Amman up the steepest and most winding roads I have ever been on in all my life. Thankfully the driver was a pro! For a quick history of Aljun Castle check out this website http://www.jordanbeauty.com/AjlunCastle.html, haha. All kidding aside, the castle is a magnificent part of world history and the really cool part is it’s in the “middle” of the Middle East. Unfortunately for our group yesterday it was hazy, but on a good day you could see the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, the Sea of Galilee, Golan Heights, and parts of Lebanon and Syria. If you stand on the top roof of the castle and look around in every direction you will be looking in the direction of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel/Palestine/West Bank, and Saudi Arabia. This is , in a nutshell, why the castle had such a large importance and
is considered to be a middle point of the Middle East. While it was extremely hot outside, the interior of the castle was quite cool and refreshing. It also helped if you brought water to stay hydrated, trust me. After our guided tour of the castle which took about two hours, we headed to Jerash to eat lunch! We had an astonishing lunch consisting of Pita, Humus, Tabbouleh, Fattoush, and a fantastic meat, potato and pepper dish (sorry I do not know that name at the moment). The food was incredible and the company was great! After our hour and a half trip back we were all exhausted! Myself and the two girls that live in my building took a taxi back and passed out. While waiting for an email to see when our class time was, the world wide web went out, typical. Luckily we had cellphones to find out our class times! Today is the first day of classes! Until next time, I hope everyone in America is doing well. I will also post my entire collection of Aljun photos on my facebook page if you would like to take a look at history! =) Part of trip: Journey Through Jordan
