In 61 days I will be boarding my flight to Istanbul beginning a 1-monthy journey through the Middle East. I rarely get excited this far in advance of traveling internationally, but this morning I may have met representatives of the Middle East’s Tourism Bureau in disguise as Gyro shop owners. Sausalito Express in the Financial District is a favorite lunch spot of mine. This restaurant is a short walk from my office that offers basic, but very good Middle Eastern cuisine. The proprietors are enthusiastic entrepreneurs who have grown their business such that they now own several locations in the bay area. Each day I visit their shop I must accept the fact that I will not be given my food order until I’ve been told stories, asked how I’m doing (and actually listened to when I respond). This morning after a brief and costly trip to the dentist I stopped by my favorite Gyro shop to grab a bite to eat.

I met Johnny (Johnny and his sister own the location). Johnny took my order, asked how I was doing (then actually listened…apparently a trait both brother and sister share), asked me where I work then offered to cater a lunch for 15-people on my behalf for free as he had like to do more business with the company I work for. After giving me his business card he broke out lamb kebob, filafal and other tasty food asking me to try it all. “Do you like it? It is very good, huh? Here have some more. Do you want some coffee?” After eating a full lamb kebab, tasting the filafal and drinking an entire coffee I was greeted by Johnny’s sister (do not recall her name). While dancing Johnny’s sister began telling me how beautiful the music from the Middle East is. I mentioned I was visiting the Middle East later this year. Johnny and his sister stopped, stepped closer to me and asked, “where?”

After giving them an overview of my upcoming trip I was asked if I’d like to meet their cousin in Jerusalem and promised that he would show me the greatest places. Following their kind offer Johnny’s sister, who apparently adores the nightlife, told me that I must not skip Jaffa, Beirut and Sharm El Sheikh.

My order was ready, I picked up my lunch bag, thanked them for the free food tasting and promised I’d stop by before I departed to collect their cousin’s contact information. Now, back at my desk, I’m full and looking at a lunch I no longer need, ha! .
