Arrest at Miami airport after suspicious item found
MIAMI — Authorities took a passenger into custody after screeners at Miami International Airport detected something suspicious in a checked bag, officials stated early Friday.
A statement by the Transportation Security Administration stated its investigators, a Miami-Dade police bomb squad and other law enforcement agencies were on the scene.
“The passenger was located and is now in law enforcement custody,” it said.
The statement stated four of the six Miami airport terminals had been evacuated and airport roadways also were closed as a safety precaution. Authorities have since reopened all concourses, airport spokesman Greg Chin stated early Friday.
“A security concern at Miami International Airport has been resolved and the airport has returned to normal operations,” Chin said.
The earlier statement did not give further details about what TSA found at about 9 p.m. Thursday.
Chin told The Associated Press early Friday that a bomb squad went to one of the concourses about 9:30 p.m. ET Thursday. He stated police looked at the item in a U.S. Customs area of Concourse E near an international arrivals area.
The item was found inside luggage in the customs area, Miami-Dade Police Department officials told local media.
Chin stated the shut down was at all but two concourses and that 100 to 200 people were evacuated.
Several flights were diverted to other parts of the airport.
Chin stated most passengers still in the concourses were initially taken outside.
“We had to have passengers moved out on the curbside,” he said, adding most of those were later granted into the areas of the two concourses still open.
Traffic at the airport was brought to a crawl, with most vehicles inching along, the Miami Herald reported. Travelers who could not be picked up at the airport instead started walking off the property.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
