The Transportation Security Administration worker recently took a farce iPad stole his pants could raise concerns about airport security in our country, but according to a study commissioned by USA TODAY, travelers should be wary of crime outside the major cities airports.

The chances of becoming a victim of crime outside most major U.S. airports, the report said, are four times greater than the national average.

Among the airports in the 29 cities studied, the region around Philadelphia International had the greatest risk, the area around Pittsburgh was the lowest.

The study also examined the risks of crime nearly 26 stations in major cities. The area around the Amtrak station in Houston has been ranked as the highest, but the areas outside stations in Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia were also considered at high risk.

"It is not surprising," said Mike Kelly, president of On Call International, a medical, security and travel assistance company. "There are so many inbound and outbound activity around airports. They are very exposed places. "

Kelly suggests that travelers make a plan for how they leave a station or airport before their arrival. "Go online and get familiar with the geography of the region so you know which direction you're supposed to go when you leave the airport or train station. Print a map or written directions to make sure that you do not waiting for the GPS in your rental car to get there. "

When getting a cab outside a train station or airport, Kelly also urges travelers to keep an eye on their luggage. "Do not enter the cabin, but make sure everything is in the trunk," he said. "We just had a client who lost a suitcase because the cab driver to let him the curb. "

"Often people do not pay attention when they travel," said Charlie LeBlanc, president of security services for Frontier MEDEX. "They think about the meeting, they will rather how they will go to the meeting. So vigilance is really the key."
