DOT: U.S. highway travel up slightly in June

WASHINGTON — U.S. highway travel climbed 1.3 percent in June from a year ago, rising 3.4 billion miles to 263.9 billion miles the U.S. Transportation Department stated Friday.

The increase in travel followed a 0.1 percent drop in miles driven in May, revised down from the previously reported 0.1 percent increase.

Total highway travel for the year is still up 0.1 percent, or 1.6 billion miles, from the same period last year.

Highway travel was up around the country in June, rising the most in the North Central region, up 1.8 percent, followed by a 1.7 percent increase in the Northeast.

The number of miles driven increased in every state, except for South Dakota (-0.2 percent), Louisiana (-3.1 percent), Colorado (-0.1 percent) and Hawaii (-3.2 percent).

The Transportation Department tracks motorists through more than 4,000 automatic traffic recorders operated by say highway agencies.
