Flight drops suddenly over India; 20 hurt

NEW DELHI – An Emirates plane dropped suddenly in the air over India on Sunday after experiencing turbulence, injuring 20 passengers, a statement from the airline said.

“EK-530 from Dubai to Kochi came across a short period of heavy turbulence while cruising at 35,000 feet. It experienced a 200-foot (60-meter) descent in altitude,” an e-mailed statement from Majid al-Mualla, a senior official said. Kochi is in the southern say of Kerala.

Of the 350 passengers on board, 20 suffered minor injuries, the statement said.

The aircraft landed safely and the captain requested medical support to meet the aircraft. All the injured passengers have now been released, the statement said.

The United Arab Emirates’ General Civil Aviation Authority stated it was working with Emirates and the Indian Civil Aviation Authority to investigate the incident.
