Report from Future Travel Experience 2011 in Vancouver, BC
Once the stuff of science fiction movies, iris recognition is becoming a reality at airports and could be used for other purposes, such as border control.
AOptix Technologies produces the recognition system used in a handful of airports, including Gatwick airport in London and Doha International Airport in Qatar.
"The system speeds up processing of passengers, giving high confidence authentication and high throughput," said David B. Johnston, vice president AOptix Technologies' development of the market, biometrics programs.
Iris recognition technology has not yet been unveiled in the U.S. – yet. "The technology has been selected for authentication and clearance known traveler program will be piloted in two border airports in the United States," Johnston says, adding that he could not investigate such airports at this time.
