Universal Orlando ride evacuated after fire
ORLANDO, Florida – An island ride at Universal Orlando Resort was evacuated on Saturday after a fire engulfed a roof structure under which the ride takes visitors. No major injuries were reported.
Park spokesman Tom Schroder said an employee noticed smoke coming from Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls, a log rising float ride at Universal's Islands of Adventure, about 5 clock local time Saturday. The theme park is part of the resort, which includes the Universal studios.
Schroeder said staff ride shut down and evacuated visitors from the area. He said: "Our guests were on the trip," but that he did not know whether all passengers were carried out under the roof when it burned.
"This type of material provides a lot of black smoke," Orlando fire chief Greg Hoggatt said Deputy to the Orlando Sentinel.
About 40 firefighters responded to the fire which was brought under control about half an hour. Hoggatt told the newspaper that investigators were in an electrical problem that caused the fire look.
The fire service said calls late Saturday night to Universal Orlando.
It was unclear how many people had to be evacuated. Schroeder said the Orlando Fire Department supports a small number of visitors they had, said smoke inhaled.
The ride remains down while the flame is studied closed. Schroeder said he had no damage estimate or know if the ride would open again.
"We are still reviewing, (say) to know that early this evening," he said late Saturday night.
But he said the area as Toon Lagoon, which includes driving the log floats, known reopened Saturday night. The amusement park itself also remains open.
