David Alan Anderson, 60, was removed from a Delta Airlines plane in Salt Lake City before he left for Las Vegas Sunday, after threatening to slit the throat of a passenger during a fight for the armrest, according to the court files.
Authorities later found a knife to carry in his bag, and the man arrested.
A federal judge in Salt Lake City, Anderson ordered Thursday to undergo a mental health assessment.
He is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on an aircraft and retaliation against a federal officer from the threat of murder.
"I'm going to kill you in front of your children," Anderson said one policeman, according to authorities.
"It gives me great pleasure to see you again, but will not see me, Bucko", later told agents of the FBI.
In court Thursday, Anderson's lawyer told the judge his client was a retired lawyer Salt Lake City who does not take medication for anxiety and bipolar disorder.
"What is important here is none of these threats were acted upon," lawyer Steven Killpack said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Kennedy called Anderson a "danger to society and a danger to himself." He said Anderson had a series of run-INS with the law over the past year, including assaulting a police officer and tries to jump off a balcony Salt Lake City hotel.
"We are very concerned that if released, would pose a danger to society," says Kennedy.
The employee was working X-ray machine when Anderson came through with the knife was sent for further training, said Transportation Security Administration spokesman Dankers Lorie.
