Washington Monument still closed because of cracks

Washington Monument is closed on the following Tuesday's earthquake, cracks were discovered after the new structure.

Washington Monument will be closed on Tuesday, following 5.8-magnitude earthquake followed by some new cracks revealed Pyramidion or top of the structure.

The National Park Service has hiredengineering firmsWiss, Janney, Elstner (WJE) Associates, Inc., North Book, Illinois, and Associates, November Tipping Berkeley, California, to assess and repair the damage. Both companies are specialized in investigating the earthquake damaged structures.

WJE has also worked with the National Park Service structures in the past, including the stabilization and seismic upgrades Alcatraz Cell House at Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the repair of 352-foot tall Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial in Ohio.

There is no timeline, when the monument will be reopened.

"Washington Monument is one of America's most prominent landmarks, and we do whatever it takes, it will return completely and correctly," said Robert A. Vogel, Superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks.

Last year marked the125th years of dedication to the Washington Monument is February 21, 1885. Built in honor of President George Washington, themonument stands 555 feet tall and is one of the most important structures in Washington, DC

Historic Washington National Cathedral also damaged during the earthquake on Tuesday and will remain closed until Saturday. Prayer Service will celebrate the dedication of Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial that was designed for that day is transferred to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception is located in the campus Catholic University of America.

The most powerful quake to hit the east coast 67 years shook buildings and people as far north as Montreal, as far south as Atlanta, and west of Chicago. NBC's Tom Costello has more on the aftermath of the quake.

Washington, DC, saw 17000000 visitors last year, said Robin McClain Director of Communications Destination DC, and the Washington Monument is one of the most attractions.

"It is a symbol," said McClain. "It is certainly a monument, when people see it, they know it's in Washington, DC"
