He describes himself as "a free-attitude, gays, lesbians, bi, gay and straight." Relaxed and friendly bar staff mix cocktails, and within a refrigerated environment. The burgers do not disappoint: try the beef burger Jennifer Hopelezz with guacamole and bacon or lamb burger with tzatziki Dolly Bellefleur and grilled zucchini. They are served with chunky wedges and a salad dressed with Mayo-heavy. And try the Metropolitan – a cosmo made with the Dutch Gin liqueur.

Nestled down the Nes – what looks like an alley running south from the Dam Square – is unprepossessing from the outside, but inside it is usually packed with customers in the small wooden tables. They do not take reservations, so arrive early and enjoy a drink while you wait. There is no menu (in the direction of ink on paper) so expect your server to recite a list of dishes. These range from classic French and Italian as steak tartare and carpaccio, through the North African tagines and curries Indonesia. For starters, try their house in the block, which is coarse, game and full of rustic French flavor. The meat of the generally good, with fortunately not quite cooked, well seasoned and generous steaks, chips pieces.
Do not go to if you are teetotal Zotte. This "coffee brown" is a mecca for lovers of Belgian beers, with several good beers and scores more in bottles. To prevent you from getting too soaked, a simple menu but the filling is proposed. This is classic fare brown cafes: the steaks with pepper, blue cheese sauce or mushrooms, lamb or grilled chicken simply prepared. Non meat eaters are in for a treat: try the Hartig Pie – a quiche mainly deep saucepan. Changes in filling, but usually involves some form of cheese and greens. It's huge, filling and feels like a hug on a cold day. Try gently Bokbier a dark autumn evening and breathe a sigh of satisfaction.

East Africa food is not well represented in Amsterdam, but where it is, you can expect the generosity and pride of the kitchen. Azmarino decoration is warm and kitschy, with a friendly atmosphere to match. Food is served in trays sharing giant, whose base is formed by a layer of tangy, spongy pancakes that are typical of the region, with a bunch of other pancakes on the side to mop up the juices. The food is hot, sour, sweet and spicy at the same time: marinated chicken drumsticks juicy, slow cooked lamb and lentil-based sauces. Small pile of salad dotted around the plateau offers welcome relief from the cool pepper.

Something of an institution lunch, has the best sandwiches in Amsterdam. Not surprisingly, many people in the country (especially students) know too, so the tables are hard to come by in the afternoon. If the sun is shining, the tables are outside on the sidewalk next to the canal, improve your chances of scoring a seat. Try broodje (a generic name for sandwiches, made with your choice of bread) with avocado, smoked chicken, sun dried tomatoes and melted brie. If perfection was in the form of bread, it would be this: salty, smoky, creamy, with a touch of acidity. And large enough to fill you until the end of the afternoon, when it is time to return for a coffee and a slice of cake …

With a terrace overlooking the opening Nieuwmarkt and every day, is the kind of joint, you can skip the morning coffee for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, beer and tapas after work, or dinner. At noon, do pimped club sandwiches with smoked chicken, crispy bacon, Dutch cheese, salads and sauces with a kick. The tapas are superb, and deviate from the standard Spanish Italian Dutch croquettes and bruschetta. Main courses are also international, with dishes recent, including fajitas and a skewer of grilled meat mixed. Traditional Dutch white beer and mulled wine are available until late, and the interior is all of the 70 funky orange and brown.
is the Dutch translation of "Yum Yum" – the noise you make when you try their pizza Tartufata. The house specialty includes Italian ham, rocket, parmesan and (especially) in truffle sauce. The dough is thin, crisp and nutty with edges still slightly burnt toppings are fresh, authentic and generous, and the nose is simply addictive. This is an array of other pizzas, as well as bresaola, buffalo mozzarella, bruschetta and other traditional Italian antipasti. Despite (or perhaps because of) its off-the-beaten track location, has a sense of neighborhood and is still occupied.

is conveniently located just west of Dam Square, making it ideal for a break between seeing the sights of the city or shopping in the Kalverstraat close – more of a recommendation for lunch or coffee afternoon for dinner. No visitor should leave Amsterdam without a slice of appelgebak (apple pie), and Paleis is one of the best the city has to offer: thick, buttery pastry, sweet, cinnamon speckled apple and a large portion of gloriously indulgent whipped cream.
