Q & A: S'mores, horror stories and baggage charges

By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor

Every Friday, Overhead Bin will answer a burning question sent by a distressed traveler. If you have a problem, research or myth you disspelled, send it!

Today's question comes from Shayna Bloom Chazin, who sends her son to summer camp:

Q: 11-year-old My son is flying to camp and bringing 2 duffels, a rolling backpack and a guitar in a soft pouch. In the event that brings the backpack and guitar on the plane we will be charged extra? The size backpack is: 19 "H x 13 ¾" W x 8 "D. Does flying Continental and JetBlue.

A: Your question has me flashing back to learn, make s'mores and are too scared to sleep after a night of ghost stories. Instructions for short bed sheets are available upon request, but first let's take your kid away to camp.

Your son is traveling on two airlines to check the baggage rules for both. I hope you or your son is good at math.

First there are two duffels will control. JetBlue allows the first bag to fly free, but charges $ 34 for the second. Continental will charge for both checked bags: $ 25 for first and $ 35 for the second.

These charges are in any way, so you can save some cash by using a simple bag is a little more than a duffel (but not exceeding 62 linear inches than any airline) and keeping the weight of the bag less than 50 pounds.

(Make sure your son weigh bag when camp is over. Craft projects and other souvenirs of summer can cause a heavy burden of overweight bag on the way home.)

For those who have Firefox: Both Continental and JetBlue set carry-on baggage, such as a bag plus one personal item, and each allows musical instruments to be taken into account.

The backpack describing fits within the limits indicated on the website of each airline and if the guitar is not very large (JetBlue limit is 45 linear inches) and isn'ta jet plane, there should be room in the overhead bins on guitar.
