Sick in Mexico: If you make the resort?
Q: My partner and I have recently returned from a six-day holiday at the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. While we were there, many guests were afflicted by a serious illness. We began to hear, soon after our arrival and within two days, we were both very ill with vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

For the last four days of our trip we were barely able to eat or drink and would not risk the chance to leave the resort for all trips.
Published measured by the large number of complaints on the internet many other guests were also affected. Several even hospitalization.
Because our annual holiday was ruined by this outbreak, we want to be reimbursed or offered some level of incentive for future travel on another Barcelo property. We have written to the hotel but have received no response. Can you help us? – Daniel Vosburgh, Chicago
A: Barcelo should have answered your complaint, explain what went wrong in his Puerto Vallarta property while you were there, and offers an apology, at a minimum.
It is important to understand that this hotel is an all-inclusive resort, which means that it is designed to provide the kind of place you never left. Every meal, every drink, every snack in the room price included. So if there is an outbreak of a mysterious disease that could potentially affect many people.
That's apparently what happened here. If the reports about this outbreak, the read happens in the spring of 2010, you will see, there was speculation that it could be anything from the flu to a gastrointestinal virus. In a response published on the Internet through the hotel management, Barcelo claimed that tests of water and food were negative, and finally pushed the illness on pollution in a nearby river.
While it is laudable for Barcelo is to respond to these issues in a public forum, I think it is equally important to deal with the outbreaks on a case-by-case basis by customers. Why did not you bother replying to the hotel? You sent your e-mail to the president, marketing department and press office of the company, which no doubt led back to the property. It can be dropped between the cracks.
Barcelo I contacted on your behalf. A representative called and they offered you a free week stay at the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta.
