Sizzling heat is bad news for traveling pets
Most airlines do not allow pets to fly as cargo when temperatures exceed 85 degrees.
A blistering heat wave has cooked most of the country in recent days – sometimes weeks – and forecasters say the temperature can not cool for some time.
Triple-digit temperatures are creating headaches for people who plan to bring a pet over the summer.
If you plan to fly with your pet, here are some things to consider:
AirlinePet policies vary by airline, but most carriers will not transport pets in the cargo hold of a plane if temperatures exceed 85 degrees at any time during a trip. (United, Continental, American and Delta have similar rules. Southwest Airlines does not allow pets as cargo.)
Policies are similar but not equal, said Rachel Farris, director of operations petrelocation.com, Continental mainly used for domestic flights, and promotes the company's PetSafe program, which offers travel climate-controlled warehouses and tarmacs to cargo holds.
Other airlines, regardless of the season and breed of animal, has room for improvement, said Farris. "I think we're starting to see that."
HealthFlying your pet is stressful for both humans and pets, and extreme temperatures add to the mix.
Pants mascots when stressed, Farris said. "I gasp when hot and can make you stressed to hyperventilate," he said.
The crateFarris suggests buying a box ahead of time so that your pet gets used to it. "Put it somewhere in the house where the pet can interact with it, putting away toys and goodies in it," he said. A box-shaped mascot, will be more comfortable.
The box should be large enough so that your pet has office four to six inches when standing, as well as room to lie down comfortably and turn around.
And pay attention to ventilation. Farris suggests buying travel boxes with holes on all four sides. "It is better for the pet and better ventilation."
Please touchIf seems that temperatures will rise above 85 degrees, be proactive. Contact your airline and make sure they will not be surprised when you get to the airport.
If you are traveling from or through a part of the U.S. you are experiencing extreme temperatures, consider flying at night or early morning. "Choosing a flight leaving at night and arrives early in the morning before the track begins to warm," advises PetTravel.com.
