Wrongfully charged for expired tabs car rental

Q: While we were visiting in Philadelphia a few months ago, we parked our car Hertz rental center. Almost immediately after walking, I saw an officer stop by the car and start writing a ticket. I ran over and asked him if I had parked in the wrong place or something like that and informed me that it was just a matter of my tag is expired. I told him I was home and he suggested I give his ticket to Hertz and informs them that if they took care of the tag, the ticket would be canceled.

When we returned the car from Hertz, my husband handed the ticket to the agent and explained what happened. They wrote on the windshield with a wax pen "expired tags" and has said he would take care of him for us.

Fast forward about a month later, and we received a communication from the arm collection agency Hertz ATS treatment services. I called and tried to talk to them and said they should consider, but could not really do anything and then there has recently sent another bill, this time with a higher rate for the delay. I tried to call Hertz and after being bounced from person to person and explaining my situation, no one seemed able to help. I'm not really sure I should talk to their neighbor. Can you help? – Meaghan Dellar, Cincinnati

A: Hertz should have ensured the tags on your rental has been provided until now. It would have to pay the ticket, as agreed.

But there were some things he could do to avoid this, too. Although it is not your responsibility, not a bad idea to check the names on your car before leaving the game. When managing a fleet of hundreds of vehicles, it is easy to overlook an expired registration or two.

When he returned the car, I'd just spoken to the employee when it was said Hertz would "take care of it." Get writing. This may mean talking to a supervisor, but it's worth it. Even if the contractor refuses to put something in writing, you have a name and phone number, and can follow that person if there is a problem later.

I also noticed that most of your communication success with Hertz by phone. In this situation, an e-mail works much better. If the company refuses to help you through the form on its Web site, you can always appeal your case to someone higher up with a sequence of keystrokes and mouse clicks.

Lately, car rental companies have become more alert to collect unpaid debts from their customers, sometimes coming to sue them. Taking such a hard line is not particularly good for the image. Nor is it a customer-friendly policy.

I asked Hertz to take another look at your case. A company spokesman said ATS was directed not to bill customers for expired tags. "However, some technical fault caused a handful of customers to be billed," he added.
